The sea finds its depth
The sea around the island used to be one flat sheet of blue, with a jagged pale band along every coast where the water met the land. Today it has a bottom: clear shallows over the sand, a line of surf on every beach, and a swell that catches the sun.
Shallows you can read
Fly out from any beach and watch the water. Right at the sand it's clear enough to see the bottom; a little further out it turns turquoise, then teal, and a few boat-lengths offshore it deepens into the blue the Brick Sea has always been.
That gradient is a map. A gently shelving beach throws pale water far out to sea, while a cliff drops straight into the deep blue with barely a fringe of green. Skimming the wavetops in a Sparrowhawk, you can see the island coming up under you before you see the beach; on a destroyer's bridge, you can read the coastline ahead from the colour of the water long before you reach it.
Surf on every shore
Every beach has surf now: a band of white water rolling in toward the sand, lines breaking one after another, and the swash foaming right at the waterline. It follows the real shore wherever it runs, around every headland and islet in every theater.
Out on the Brick Steppe, the lakes behave like lakes. Their water sits clear over the mud, and their shores lap instead of breaking, so a Paladin parked at the water's edge sits by a quiet lake, not a beach.
The sun on the water
The whole sea moves now. A light swell runs across it with the round's wind, and every ripple catches the light. Sunlight glints off the water in the late afternoon, and at golden hour the sun lays a road of glitter straight across the sea toward the horizon, bright enough to silhouette a warship steaming across it. After dark the same swell carries a trail of moonlight.
Look out toward the horizon and the sea takes the colour of the sky: deep blue under the bow, pale and silvery far out, melting into the haze where a distant island sits.
Every screen
The new sea is in every theater: the island, the Brick Sea, the steppe lakes and the Brick Gulf. It's on every device too. Phones and tablets draw a lighter version of the same water, tuned to run as fast as the old flat blue did. Switch on High-fidelity graphics in Settings and the glints burn bright enough to bloom.
See you on the water.
