The Yamato: eighteen-inch guns at the top of the ladder

The naval ladder has a new summit. Past the Des Moines, past forty sinkings and then thirty-five more, waits the Yamato — 263 metres of super-battleship and nine 18.1-inch rifles, the biggest guns any warship ever carried. She fires a shell built for her alone: the Type 91.

The Yamato super-battleship firing a broadside: a long tan-decked hull with a stepped pagoda tower, a raked funnel and three triple turrets with red team roofs, muzzle flashes at the forward guns and two great clouds of gunsmoke rolling up off her deck
The Yamato lets go a broadside — three triple turrets, nine 18.1-inch rounds, and smoke enough to hide a destroyer.

A shell of her own

Every other battleship on the Brick Sea fires the same big round. The Yamato doesn't. Her guns load the Type 91, an 18.1-inch shell that is the heaviest ever fired at sea, and you'll know it the moment she shoots. Each round flies visibly bigger than an Iowa's and burns a longer tracer behind it. Where it comes down short or over, it throws up a column a third taller than anyone else's fall of shot. On her bridge the shell chip says it plainly: AP 18.1″.

The Type 91 hits harder and punches deeper than anything else afloat. An Iowa's belt that would shrug off a cruiser's armor-piercing round won't stop it, and a citadel hit from a full broadside is the biggest single blow in the game.

What she pays for it

The Yamato is the toughest ship on the sea and the hardest-hitting, and she is also the slowest to answer. Her guns take 9.5 seconds to reload, longer than any other battery in the line. She builds speed slowly, turns wider than any hull in the line, and is a big, bright target that every enemy gunner can see coming. Get caught bow-on to a destroyer screen and that reload will feel like an hour.

So she rewards captains who plan. Pick your bearing early, turn broadside before the enemy closes, and make every salvo count. When all nine guns bear, nothing on the Brick Sea wants to be on the other end of them.

A prize, not a patrol

Like the Des Moines, the Yamato is premium: the bots never sail her. The enemy fleet stays the destroyers, cruisers and battleships you know, and the only Yamato you'll ever meet is one another captain earned. Your sinkings ride your pilot record between sessions, so every ship you send under is a step closer to her. At seventy-five a callout tells you she's yours, and her card in the hangar lights up.
